Comfort in Your Room: Ancient Traditions, Real Physics

🌿

Comfort in Your Room

Ancient Traditions, Real Physics

As a traditional Italian country house, La Faula is designed to naturally master the summer heat.

Instead of fighting the environment, the house uses its immense structural mass to manage it. We invite you to live like a local and work with the design of the house by understanding how it breathes.

The Mechanics of a Historic Stone Wall

La Faula is constructed in hewn stone, with walls over 60 cm thick.

☀️

The Daytime “Thermal Battery”

During the day, the massive stone walls absorb the sun’s energy. It takes a tremendous amount of energy just to warm the stone itself.

The heat moves incrementally through the walls, taking  10 to 14 hours to reach the inside of your room, usually arriving between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM.

🌙

The Nighttime Reset

By the early hours of the morning, the outside air cools significantly, as you can see in the chart below.

At this point, the walls reverse their behavior, radiating that stored heat back outward into the cool night air.

By opening the windows at night, natural cross-ventilation flushes infiltrating warmth away, keeping the indoor temperature remarkably flat and stable, typically between 25°C and 27°C.

🕰️

Your Daily Rhythm for a Cool Stay

To keep your room perfectly comfortable, please follow this simple, traditional daily cycle.

1

During the Day

Keep all windows and shutters closed tight.

If windows are left open, blast-heated daytime air rushes in, warming the interior stone and creating an unwanted “oven” effect.

2

From Evening until Morning

Keep your windows fully open.

This allows the heat being discharged into your room from the stone walls to be flushed outside.

Don’t worry about mosquitoes—they are rare to non-existent here at night!

3

Air Conditioning Usage

In rooms equipped with air conditioning, the system is set to operate from late afternoon until 10:30 PM.

This eases the transition from the day’s heat to the night’s cool, ensuring you are perfectly comfortable for sleep.

The builders who constructed La Faula centuries ago belonged to this landscape.

By respecting the traditional rhythm of the house, you’ll enjoy a beautifully cool, authentic and comfortable stay.

The Diurnal Temperature Swing

The chart below illustrates a typical summer heatwave profile in our locality.

Notice how sharply the outdoor temperature drops at night, creating the perfect window of opportunity to open the house and “charge” the cool masonry for the following day.
